  • Remembering Tigers, By Remembering Wildlife.

This hardcover coffee table book, the ninth in the series, is a collection of 88 stunning colour images donated by many of the world’s top wildlife photographers – including Art Wolfe, Jonathan & Angela Scott, Greg du Toit and Sergey Gorshkov – to help protect tigers in the wild. This year’s cover image was taken by Sarah Skinner. The book aims to raise awareness of the plight facing tigers and to raise money to protect them, with all profits from book sales going to conservation. There are only around 5,500 tigers left in the wild and they are now restricted to just 10% of their historical range. Sales from Remembering Tigers will be used to fund conservation projects in areas where they are vulnerable. Weighing up to 260kg and measuring up to 3 metres in length, the tiger is the largest of the big cats. It is found in Asia, from India – where two-thirds of all wild tigers live – through to the Russian Far East and into China. Its habitat ranges from sub-tropical forests to snow-covered mountainous terrain. Numbers are increasing in some areas, thanks to conservation efforts, yet the tiger is the least numerous of all the large wild cats and is listed as ‘endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Founder and producer of Remembering Wildlife Margot Raggett MBE said: “It’s an oft-quoted fact that there are more tigers in captivity in the US than there are left in the world, a stark reminder of how the future of tigers might end if conservationists do not continue their focus and their fight. Tigers are a bellwether for the health of an ecosystem. For every tiger protected in the forest, there are plants, trees, insects, birds and other mammals who thrive.” The afterword is by Amit Sankhala, trustee of the Tiger Trust, who said: “Seeing a tiger in its natural habitat is a mesmerising encounter and I am thankful for Margot Raggett’s book which not only shows the beauty of the tiger but will also inspire the next generation of conservationists.” More than 280 wildlife photographers have contributed to the Remembering Wildlife series since it started in 2016, working under the banner Wildlife Photographers United. It has now raised over £1.15m GBP/$1.5m USD/R26m ZAR, for 74 conservation projects in 33 countries.  About the Author The series of books was created by wildlife photographer Margot Raggett MBE after she saw a poached elephant in Kenya and set out to make the most beautiful book on a species ever seen. She persuaded the world’s best wildlife photographers to donate an image and Remembering Elephants came out in 2016. At the time, Margot Raggett MBE thought the book would be a one-off. But her vision created a series, with Remembering Elephants followed by Remembering Rhinos, Remembering Great Apes, Remembering Lions, Remembering Cheetahs, Remembering African Wild Dogs, Remembering Bears, Remembering Leopards – and soon-to-launch ninth book in the collection, Remembering Tigers. Margot Raggett was awarded the MBE in the King’s Birthday 2023 Honours List for services to international wildlife conservation. • TUMI SEKHUKHUNE: READY TO RISE AGAIN AT THE ICC WOMEN’S T20 WORLD CUP 2024

As the Proteas Women gear up for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Tumi Sekhukhune finds herself at a defining moment in her career. After battling through injuries and missing the 2023 home World Cup, the seasoned seam bowler is ready to prove her worth and represent her community of Daveyton, Johannesburg, with pride. Overcoming Setbacks For Sekhukhune, missing last year’s T20 World Cup was a significant setback. "It wasn';t a nice experience for me, especially because it was at home. Playing on a global stage in front of my family would have been very special,” she shares. However, this disappointment spurred her to work even harder. "I had to sharpen my skills and reflect on what I could offer to the team" ; she says. The aftermath of her recurring groin injury in 2022 and her exclusion from the World Cup squad led to both mental and physical challenges. "I had a mental breakdown. Sometimes you feel like you're not enough, or that your skills aren’t enough." Motivated by her teammates and provincial coaches, including former DP World Lions coach and new Proteas Women fielding lead Bongani ‘Coach Fantastic’ Ndaba, Sekhukhune found a way forward. "I had coaches who helped me improve in specific areas, and taking small steps helped me stay motivated" she adds. Despite the challenges of regaining fitness, she maintained her focus. "Some days, I didn’t feel like doing anything, but I told myself to take it one day at a time." Pride in Representing Daveyton Daveyton, her hometown, has always played a significant role in Sekhukhune’s journey. "Growing up in Daveyton shaped the person I am today" ; she reflects. A multi-talented athlete who participated in handball, volleyball, and netball in her youth, Sekhukhune’s transition to cricket allowed her to showcase her skills on an international stage when she made her debut in September 2018. Representing her community in the World Cup fills her with pride. "It's special to see people from Daveyton supporting me, posting messages on social media, and knowing they're 100% behind me. That connection really means a lot to me." Preparing for the World Cup Securing her spot in the 2024 T20 World Cup squad is a milestone for Sekhukhune. "One of my main goals was to get selected for the World Cup. Now that I have, my focus is on staying consistent, ensuring I’m prepared, and being ready to seize opportunities when they come." Sekhukhune has also tailored her training to adapt to the challenging conditions in the UAE. "I spent more time in the sun, trying to get used to the conditions. Our tour of Pakistan before heading to the UAE helped me adjust to the heat." ; As a senior player, she knows her role goes beyond just bowling. "It’s important for me to contribute as much off the field as on it. My bowling style suits these conditions, and with the team’s success last year, there’s pressure, but I’m ready for it." Personal Growth and Reflection The past few years have provided Sekhukhune with opportunities for personal growth. "I had to unlearn certain habits and adopt new ones. It wasn’t easy, but it helped me improve both as a cricketer and as a person. " Her time away from the game allowed her to reconnect with family and friends. "I spent more time with family, friends, and my dog, which helped me stay grounded." She also pursued her studies during recovery. "My injury gave me time to focus on finishing my degree in Supply Chain Management in Logistics, and my family motivated me to continue my education." Advice to Future Proteas Sekhukhune has learned the value of patience and discipline in overcoming setbacks. "Sports come with challenges and injuries, but it’s important to stay grounded. Do your gym work, train hard, and fuel your body with the right nutrients. When setbacks come, be disciplined and trust the process." For young girls dreaming of playing for the Proteas, her message is clear: "Cricket is a rewarding game, filled with ups and downs. Keep working on your craft, stay patient, and even if you fall down, you’ll rise again. Believe in yourself, and know that you are going places." Ready to Shine Again Sekhukhune’s journey back to fitness and form is a testament to her strength and determination. As she prepares for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, she stands as a proud representative of her community, ready to make her mark once again. With the support of Daveyton and the lessons she’s learned along the way, Tumi Sekhukhune is poised to rise, carrying the heart of South Africa with her on the global stage. • SUN CARE FOR PRE, DURING AND POST SUN EXPOSURE

With the days getting warmer as we prepare to welcome the sunny season in South Africa, a lot of you have many days planned that involve being outside and moreover exposed to UV rays. While armouring up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen before heading outside is essential, how you take care of your skin post-sun exposure is just as important. This month to commemorate the launch of their UV Derm Post UV Exposure Repair Body Lotion – SKIN functional, a leading South African skincare brand, wants to emphasise not only the importance of protecting your skin while you are in the sun but also the post-care and repair for the skin after it has been exposed to the sun.  Kevin Khosa, Customer Service Manager at  SKIN functional  said: "UV exposure causes damage to the skin, so it's important to do whatever you can to repair that damage. More immediate damage would show up as a sunburn, but longer term, it would show up as dark spots, decreased skin laxity, or skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to not only apply your skin sunscreen once a day. It needs to be reapplied throughout the day to ensure your skin is always sufficiently protected. The SKIN functional newly launched Sunscreen Stick is the perfect on-the-go sunscreen that you can carry with you and is easy to apply." So, what is sun damage?  Sun damage is not just a sunburn, but more when the sun prematurely ages the skin, this is called photoageing, and this can lead to skin cancer. Sunburn also causes DNA damage. Dermatologists refer to the damage the sun does to skin by several names, including photoageing, photodamage, solar damage, or sun damage. It can take as little as five minutes for fair-skinned people to start taking on the harmful effects of the sun. Additionally, UV rays affect your skin for hours even after you're out of the sun.    You will know that your skin has sun damage when you see spots, blotches, and wrinkles that show up over time. A suntan is also a side effect of sun damage.  The sun's beams bring out a chemical in your body associated with melanin, which darkens your skin, part of an effort to protect it. Other kinds of damage aren't as easy to spot. If you are looking to correct the skin from this damage you may want to consider incorporating a Retinaldehyde Serum into your routine. This active ingredient works to improve skin’s surface as it treats signs of sun damage, uneven texture, wrinkles, and surface imperfections.    Retinaldehyde is a Vitamin A derivative and the precursor to Retinoid acid. Effective for ageing, acne and dark spot concerns, Retinaldehyde inhibits collagen breakdown, reduces dermal elastosis, and significantly improves photo aged skin. It also unclogs blocked pores, improving black heads and breakouts. Promotes cell turnover, encouraging new cell growth for a more even complexion. Try the NEW SKIN functional 0.2% Retinaldehyde that is available from today.    Post Exposure Repair    Your post exposure repair is as important as your sun exposure care. After you have been in the sun, reaching for a good lotion or moisturiser with skin-loving ingredients can help replenish and protect the skin barrier.    Khosa recommends using a product with:  -        Vegan Lanolin which is a deeply hydrating ingredient;  -        Anhydroxylitol known to deeply hydrate the skin and retain moisture;   -        Centella Asiatica to soothe inflammation in the skin and;  -        Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract to further soothe inflammation in the skin.   “A lotion or moisturiser with these effective ingredients will not only help your skin feel better but it will help heal the skin barrier and get your skin to good health again,” added Khosa.    Sun damage is a very real risk for your skin and with global warming and the earth’s atmosphere depleting, the sun's rays are getting stronger and more damaging. To holistically protect your skin, your sun care routine should be all encompassing and incorporate pre-sun care, during as well as post exposure repair. The most ideal scenario is to limit sun exposure as far as possible and wear protective clothing when venturing outdoors.    Today, the brand new UV Derm Post UV Exposure Repair Body Lotion launches and it's everything your skin needs post sun exposure. Apply a liberal amount to the affected areas and apply as often as needed.    Visit  www.skinfunctional.com  and experience the powerful benefits of the new UV Derm Post UV Exposure Repair Body Lotion and explore the SUN functional range for all your sun care needs.    EXPLORE THE SUN FUNCTIONAL RANGE For more information:  Instagram:  @skin_functional Facebook: @skinfunctional YouTube:  SKIN functional Twitter: @skin_functional   Hashtag: #skinfunctional Shop:  https://skinfunctional.com/

  • Is your teen experiencing growing pains? Eight tips to help relieve their pain

As many parents of teenagers know, when your child moves from tween to teen, their growth spurts are accompanied by various bodily changes. Among these changes includes “growing pains” whereby many teens report experiencing pains in their legs.   “These pains, while common and usually harmless, can be a source of discomfort and concern for both teenagers and their parents,” explains Selvan Naicker, brand manager for CrampEase®. He continues to explain that growing pains are a type of musculoskeletal discomfort that typically occurs in the legs, particularly in the thighs, calves, or behind the knees. Although the name suggests that these pains are directly related to growth, the exact cause remains unclear. What is known is that growing pains tend to occur during periods of rapid growth, particularly during the pre-teen and early teenage years.   Through research, it has been found that these pains tend to manifest in the evening or at night, often waking the teen from sleep. “The pain can range from mild to severe and is often described as an aching or throbbing sensation,” comments Naicker. It has been found that growing pains are more common in active teens but can affect anyone, and although the exact cause of growing pains is not fully understood, several factors are believed to contribute to their occurrence: Muscle fatigue: During periods of rapid growth, muscles and bones may not grow at the same rate, leading to tension and strain in the muscles. Physical activity: Active teens, especially those involved in sports, may experience growing pains more frequently due to increased physical strain on their muscles. Joint overuse: Repetitive activities, such as running or jumping, can stress the joints and surrounding muscles, contributing to discomfort. While growing pains are generally harmless and tend to resolve on their own as the teen matures, there are several ways to help alleviate the discomfort your teen may be feeling: Gentle stretching before bed can help relieve muscle tension and reduce the likelihood of nighttime pain. Focus on stretching the calves, hamstrings, and quadriceps. A warm bath before bedtime can relax sore muscles and provide temporary relief from pain. Adding Epsom salts can enhance the soothing effect. Massaging the affected area can help ease the pain and promote relaxation. Using a warm, soothing lotion or oil can enhance the benefits of massage. CrampEase® Gel formulated with plant-derived oils like Eucalyptus and Lavender, can help to relieve muscle cramps and pains while enhancing circulation. A balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium can support healthy bone and muscle development, potentially reducing the severity of growing pains. Staying well-hydrated can help maintain muscle function and reduce cramps, which may contribute to growing pains. Encourage your teen to engage in regular but moderate physical activity . Overexertion can exacerbate growing pains, so balance is key. Adequate rest is essential for recovery. Ensure that your teen is getting enough sleep and taking breaks from strenuous activities when necessary. If the pains do not improve and other symptoms such as swelling occurs, please consult your doctor   Growing pains, while uncomfortable, are a normal part of adolescence for many teens. By understanding the nature of these pains and implementing simple strategies to alleviate discomfort, you can help your teen navigate this phase with greater ease. Remember, growing pains are usually temporary and will often resolve as your teen's body adjusts to its new growth.

  • Opportunity knocks - Tourism has the potential to be a gateway to economic growth, but we need to take the right steps together.

As the economy starts to show some green shoots, Tourism Month offers a good opportunity to start collaborating about how to realise this sector’s enormous potential. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that tourism is the rocket fuel our economy needs but, igniting it will mean a commitment to doing things differently.   Today, tourism directly contributes around 3.5% of South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP), and hasn’t yet regained pre-COVID-19 levels. It employs around 733 000 people directly, also still below the pre-pandemic level of 777 686.   It’s a good start, but the figures show we could do more. Tourism in countries like Mexico (8.5%), Morocco (7.1%), Greece (7.1%) and Italy (5.7%) makes a much higher contribution to GDP. Overall, travel and tourism represent 9.1% of global GDP , giving an inkling of what we could achieve, especially given our generous endowment of natural and cultural attractions.   What’s stopping us from realising the potential gains from an unleashed tourism industry in terms of increased GDP and, crucially, the new jobs we so desperately need?   A key concern is our reputation. To become the preferred travel destination, we have the potential to be, we must treat the safety of our guests as one of our most critical priorities. Moreover, we must ensure that South Africans themselves feel safe in their own country, to offer a warm and welcoming environment to tourists.   With the right focus and determination, we can make progress on addressing crime, and over time, more positive news stories will help shape a better narrative.   Another important challenge is the lack of infrastructure. For example, while our coastline is stunning, there are only a handful of ports that cruise liners might consider attractive—around six in total. In contrast, the Mediterranean has significantly more.   Even when ships dock at places like Durban, getting guests to beautiful destinations such as Phinda, Giants' Castle, or St Lucia is difficult due to limited roads, trains, and vehicles. There's clearly potential for small businesses, like tour operators and accommodation providers, but without the necessary infrastructure, we may miss out on those opportunities.   Additionally, ongoing infrastructure issues such as water and power shortages pose further challenges for tourism and broader economic activity.     A new compact needed   These are complex and interconnected problems that will take time and concerted action to change. But, as we have already begun to see with the ongoing Eskom turnaround, it is possible to shift the dial even on what seemed like a pretty much existential problem a year ago.   Perhaps the place to start is a transparent, frank national conversation between the main stakeholders, a conversation that focuses strictly on solutions.   An absolute necessity will be a new compact between business, government and citizens. Government is crucial as it has to provide the policy framework needed and, in addition, it has to see business as a valued partner in achieving its goal of economic growth.   Conversely, business has to recognise that profitability is not the only metric; ethical employment (and other business) practices are vital in creating and maintaining the right momentum.   Individual South Africans, too, must play their part by accepting that advancement requires hard work—jobs and subsequent promotions need to be earned. It may sound straightforward, but it's certainly not. However, there are encouraging signs that we're beginning to recognise the need to move beyond our past and focus on the future.   The growing collaboration between business and government to tackle significant issues that have stunted the growth of our country is a positive example—just as the very idea of a government of national unity reflects a step in the right direction.   One of the remarkable things about South Africa is that how we look on paper is not a true reflection of the reality on the ground. The rebirth of the Springboks as a world-beating team that has genuine national support seems improbable—but bold, positive leadership from the coach and captain has shown what can be achieved. The other piece of the puzzle is the dedication and work ethic of the team, but that is a consequence of the quality of the leadership.   The same “miracle” can be achieved in tourism—to the benefit of the economy and of the country as a whole. We just have to do it.

  • FUNDAMENTALS SKINCARE CELEBRATES ITS THIRD BIRTHDAY & LAUNCHES NEW AGEING POWERHOUSE SERUM.

Changing the narrative when it comes to skincare has always been at the centre of  Fundamentals Skincare , a South African born skincare company, since inception three years ago. With September being the birthday month for the brand it poses the perfect time to reiterate this message. Not only will there be amazing birthday deals and an awesome Sip & Shop experience for all Johannesburg residents, but the brand will also be announcing its brand new Peptides serum, which aims to promote positive connotations when it comes to ageing and how the process can be a for filling and beautiful one.  Natasha Davel from  Fundamentals Skincare  said, “The launch of our Peptides serum aims to remind people that ageing is normal, natural and inevitable. With that being said, ageing should not be perceived as a dreaded unstoppable definite but rather a process that can be slowed down with treating your skin good as well as a rewarding and nostalgic experience.”  The new 10% Peptides serum from Fundamentals Skincare is a highly concentrated water-based peptide serum to address the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. The hero ingredients in this product are (1) Aectyl Hexapeptide-8 which is used widely in cosmetics and personal care products for its potential anti-ageing properties. It is primarily employed as a topical alternative to Botox, aiming to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by facial muscle contractions. Its companion in this effective serum is (2) Niacinamide, also called nicotinamide, and is a form of vitamin B3. It helps build keratin, a protein that maintains skin health. It's also been shown to make your skin stronger, smoother and brighter. Niacinamide is used to treat acne and can help nourish and protect your skin, especially when it's used with other products like retinol.    “This is a powerhouse product in a 30ml bottle that could change the way we look at ourselves year-on-year. The trick to ageing is firstly to embrace the process and then start with your ageing skincare routine as early as possible. Dermatologists recommend you start as early as age 25. This will help nourish and maintain your skin for longer and slow the process down for you – making it easy, digestible and positive."   In addition, ageing is not what it used to be 20 years ago. Nowadays, there are so many options available to repair your ageing skin and also help you with the process from micro-needling, laser and Botox. Similarly, skincare has also advanced in leaps and bounds with Peptides taking the world by storm. A new era of advanced peptides is providing gentle yet powerful targeted solutions for a range of skin concerns.    “Maintaining radiant, youthful skin goes beyond reducing wrinkles: As we age, the skin on our face, neck, and body loses firmness due to a decline in collagen and elastin. It is therefore recommended that your skincare routine changes with the changes of your skin, is holistic and reasonable,” concluded Daval.    You can shop the brand new Peptides Serum on  www.fundamentals-skincare.co.za  from today as well as explore the entire range of face and body products at affordable prices.  Visit the website: https://fundamentals-skincare.co.za
