What is self-tan? The active ingredient in most self-tan is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone). DHA is a colourless sugar that interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. As the sugar interacts with the dead skin cells, a colour change occurs. This change usually lasts about five to seven days from the initial application. When applied to the skin, DHA causes a chemical reaction with the skin to produce a tan much like the sun, but without the UVA and UVB damage to the skin. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective products available are sunless or self-tanning lotions that containing dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. And yes, it is 100% safe!

What to consider when choosing a product?

Choosing the appropriate shade is extremely important since the skin type is extremely relevant in the tanning process. Never apply a darker shade on a fair skin. You should also consider if you prefer an instant tan or a gradual tan when selecting from our self-tanning range. The ABC shade selector ensure the best colour to match you natural skin tone.

You’ve bought your exciting new Caribbeantan product, so what’s next? How do I apply self-tanner?

Step 1: Exfoliate

Exfoliating and self-tanning go hand in hand – a marriage made in heaven. Whether you’re using a mousse, spray or spritzer, you’ll need a fresh base to work with to create a smooth, streak-free glow. We advise at least 6 hours prior to tanning, massage their delicious Cinnamon & Coconut Skin Smoothing Exfolia into the skin, working from the legs upwards. Focus on particularly dry areas, like the elbows, knees and ankles to remove any dry patches of skin that tan might cling to. The natural sugar exfoliators are sure to give your skin a good buff and jojoba oil will restore moisture to your skin

Remember: Exfoliating opens the skin pores and should you apply tan too soon after exfoliating - you will end up looking spotty.

Step 2: Moisturize

To prevent your self-tanner from clinging to dry areas or looking patchy, apply a light layer of moisturiser onto dry areas of skin. Don’t forget to cover your elbows, knees, hands, and feet (particularly the ankles, knuckles and creases).

We recommend using an oil-free moisturizer, like their Milk & Honey Hydrating Body Butter. This can be used before and after your tan. This glorious, velvety feeling Body Butter is your secret weapon to keeping your tan for up to 10 days.

Formulated with Cranberry seed extract known to be rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, C, E and K and natural fatty acids to help improve skin elasticity and boost collagen production thereby assisting with the skins elasticity and wrinkling.

The best thing about this Body Butter - non greasy. So you can lather up every day to keep your skin silky smooth, supple and moisturized without feeling greasy.

Remember: Oil-based lotions can cause tan to break down and spoil your golden finish.

Step 3: Apply with a mitt

To achieve an even-looking glow, self-tanner should always be applied using a tanning mitt.

A soft, washable mitt ensures an even, streak-free application and protects the palms from staining.

Where to start? You should start with the legs and work your way upwards.

Applying tanning mousses: Pump yourself tanner onto a tanning mitt, then sweep over the skin using circular motions to achieve an even-looking and streaky-free finish.

Applying tanning mists / sprays: Spritz onto the body, then blend with a tanning mitt to achieve a natural-looking bronze.

THREE TIPS WHEN APPLYING CARIBBEANTAN:

TIP ONE: Always apply your Caribbeantan in a cool, dry area to keep yourself from perspiring.

It's important to exfoliate and rinse off before you tan to remove any dead skin cells, dirt, oil, and anything else that might create a barrier between your skin and the product. However, you'll want to leave the steamy bathroom before the application process begins. Why? Humidity, water, and sweat can break down the self-tanner, creating a streaky mess, so move to a cool, dry place instead.

TIP TWO: Distribute the self-tanner on your mitt evenly by applying it to the centre of your mitt before folding it in half.

This helps you apply less product to your face, hands, elbows, knees, and feet using the tip of the mitt. You also won't end up overdoing it and applying the same amount to your face that you would, say, your thigh.

TIP THREE: Contour your cheekbones with a small sponge brush and a self-tanner that's made specifically for your face.

You’ve seen it on TikTok, now it’s time to try it for yourself!

Applying Caribbeantan to your face can be a little intimidating because, it's your face, but if you keep the product concentrated right below your cheekbones, under your jawline, and on the sides of your forehand — and then a thin layer over the rest of your face — you'll create a subtly contoured effect that won't look like you just slapped a bunch of tanner on. Go gentle on the self-tan, and remember you can always add on more at a later stage.
