What does Mexico have in common with South Africa? A deep-rooted love for celebration and a rich cultural heritage.
In this spirit, Don Julio Tequila has partnered with this year's Festival de México to bring a dedicated Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) experience. As the world's leading luxury tequila, the brand brings the spirit of Mexico's most beloved holiday to life through a collaboration with rising star South African stylist, Obakeng Rantlhane.
The Day of the Dead is a vibrant and significant day of celebration in Mexico that honours loved ones who have passed on. To highlight this celebration, a central tradition is the creation of an ofrenda, styled by Rantlhane. He adorns it with items that capture nuances from both countries, celebrating this shared cultural heritage.
Known for his exceptional visionary approach and ability to blend traditional and modern elements, Obakeng's unique interpretation of the ofrenda brings a fresh perspective to the rich tradition of the Day of the Dead. His designs, incorporating vivid textiles, marigolds, and symbolic decorative elements, aim to bring the holiday to life in a way that resonates with both Mexican customs and South African aesthetics.
Rantlahne says, “I am truly excited to style the ofrenda in a way that honours this significant holiday and adds a modern contemporary twist. My goal was to create a visually striking, yet respectful cultural piece that cultivates the essence of the Día de los Muertos celebration.”
Celebrating the Heart of Mexican Culture
